I materialised into existence right in front of the Golden Gate, which ended by the Hedge that divided our city, marking one of its three entry points. I waited patiently for the guards to acknowledge and address me.

“Token?” the burly one asked as I waved a golden coin in the air.

“Inner ring granted,” he communicated through the tiny black speaker on the nape of his collar before stepping forward and opening the gate, which grated on its hinges. I looked up to the white tower in the distance as I shuffled forward through the hustle and bustle of Omegas moving around in their expensive attire and business suits. They eyed me curiously, clearly unused to access being granted. Glass storefronts, busy cafes, and bustling bars lined the streets here, and I thought of how repugnant this whole ring was when I reflected on the humble crowd and homes just on the other side of the tall hedge.

Greed. Greed. Greed.

The word echoed in my mind as I pondered on how different life could be if there were no such things as designations, particularly since they were out of our control.

“Hey, isn’t that our ace?” a voice called out from across the pathway.

I followed the sound to a slim guy in a suit, clearly drunk as he struggled to keep his finger straight. A few people turned their heads in my direction as some passersby stopped to look. I ducked into a dark alleyway before too many people could notice me and used my power to portal closer to the white spire, recalling a memory of the exact spot.

“Raya, don’t stare,” Mum scolded as the Supreme looked down at me as we moved forward. Once a year, the entire Haven was encouraged to bring the Supreme an offering of roses, the purest symbol of love. It was said that all who made an offering would bring favour in the eyes of Omni so that we could move forward on our spiritual path to purity.

I tossed the rose down at the man’s feet, and Mum jerked me backwards by the hand, apologising to the Supreme for my recklessness. I looked around in confusion, unclear as to what I’d done wrong. I watched the way Riley bent low beside me and positioned her flower with an abundance care before moving back in silence. She grabbed my hand with a reassuring squeeze, and I copied her stance, tilting my head to look at the floor.

Bringing myself back into the present, I passed the town podium. The pink stains that marred its surface were an accurate representation of how stained the Haven had become, with its dismissiveness towards imperfections. The last execution had been held five years prior, a female Alpha tried for stalking and assaulting an Omega within the inner ring. The Supreme positioned the executions as a cleansing of the Haven, to rid us of the rot. But everywhere I walked; I saw it. In my opinion, we were all too far gone. The rot had already spread, too deeply rooted within us, eating away at us all.
